What Is Keto Coffee?
Keto coffee is a drink based on coffee and MCT fats (butter and coconut oil) without added sugar or milk. Dave Aspey, an American entrepreneur and renowned biohacker, proposed it first, and then it gained popularity among fans of the keto diet.
The classic keto coffee recipe is a strong coffee drink with the addition of ghee. The combination of caffeine and short-chain saturated fatty acids is believed to tone both the brain and the metabolism without affecting blood sugar.
Butter (including ghee) and coconut oil are made up of a special type of saturated fat that is absorbed in the digestive tract. MCT fats are the base of the coconut oil benefits.
First of all, due to the addition of oil, keto coffee is high in calories, providing a long-lasting feeling of fullness. In addition, the energy from MCT fats is used by the body for the current needs of metabolism and is practically not deposited in fat reserves.
As a stimulant of the central nervous system, caffeine gives a boost of vivacity while simultaneously reducing appetite. Thanks to this combination of ingredients, keto coffee is great as a breakfast on a carbohydrate-free diet.
Bulletproof Coffee Recipe
Here is my favorite bulletproof coffee recipe, considered a classic and used by many people.
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon ghee oil
- 500 ml sugar-free coffee
- vanilla extract
- whipped heavy cream (optional)
Calorie content per 100 grams:
- calories – 270 kcal
- carbohydrates – 0.8 g
- proteins – 1.3 g
- fat – 28 g
Use these ingredients for the preparation of two servings of high-fat coffee. First, in a French press or another suitable container, mix the strong coffee (both freshly brewed and instant coffee without sugar are suitable), then add a tablespoon of ghee, a tablespoon of coconut oil, and a little vanilla extract.
Using a whisk, mix the ingredients for about one minute. Then (optionally), add the whipped cream and stir in the keto coffee once more. Remember, whipped cream should be free of sugar or sweeteners.
Which Oil to Choose?
You can find many different recipes, but they differ only in various types of oil. I want to point out that while a keto coffee recipe may involve using butter, ghee is better. During the heat treatment, the lactose contained in the oil is baked out, reducing milk sugar amount.
In fact, keto coffee with butter includes some fast carbohydrates – which is unacceptable on a carbohydrate-free diet and intermittent fasting. In contrast, ghee is naturally refined to remove lactose and casein.
There are no strict rules concerning coconut oil. Although highly recommended by keto lovers, using a double dose of ghee does not fundamentally change the composition. In any case, the main saturated fats will be MCT triglycerides.
As you can see, keto coffee is a great way to refuel without interrupting the keto diet. However, remember that liquid calories are also calories, do not overload your diet. Bulletproof coffee does not interrupt fasting during intermittent nutrition plan and increases ketosis. However, I would not recommend that you abuse it because it is better to eat a full meal for 500-700 calories.
